1 - ETF stands for Exchange Traded Fund.  An ETF is an investment vehicle that allows people to get exposure to assets like stocks, bonds and commodities without having to personally purchase those assets. 2 - A gold ETF allows investors to benefit from a market price increase in gold without having to purchase bars of gold that must be stored securely in a vault. 3 - However, there is a reason that some prefer to purchase the actual assets so understanding which group you fall into is important. Recently, digital asset ETFs have launched.  These fall into the category of “commodity ETFs”. 4 - The two other primary types are stock ETFs and Bond ETFs. The digital asset ETFs approved to date are for Bitcoin, and Ether. Application for XRP ETF has been filed. 5 - If one were to purchase shares in an ETF fund for any of those assets, you could potentially benefit from any increases in the market prices of those digital assets. Similar to the point above about gold, investors in the ETF do not directly own the asset. 6 - They own shares in the company that owns the assets. So, if something were to happen to the fund manager (e.g. bankruptcy), the investor could be impacted, at least temporarily. 7 - Fortunately, many ETFs are set up as separate legal entities and the assets held by a third party custodian.  But in the event of a bankruptcy, there could be a period of time when the investor may not be able to sell their shares. 8 - This is one reason why some investors prefer to buy and self-custody their digital assets.  The well known expression “not your keys, not your crypto” applies in the ETF situation. 9 - Anyone who has purchased and self-custodied their own digital assets knows that there is a learning curve to use the necessary software.  Because buying into an ETF is similar to buying a stock on a platform like eTrade, the learning curve is considerably less. 10 - Therefore, there is a large group of people who would like exposure to digital assets but for a variety or reasons, do not want to self-custody. Stock ETFs generally include a basket of stocks, but to date, the digital asset ETFs include only a single asset. 11 - However, it is likely that basket ETFs will emerge to give people a more diversified exposure to the digital asset class.
