A gold-convertible dollar was the anchor for the international monetary system that provided the level monetary playing field for free trade. Without a system that sets up a unified currency for pricing the value of competitive goods and services across borders, the logic of free trade is upended. When Adam Smith wrote his “Wealth of Nations” treatise, the world defined the value of currencies in terms of gold and silver. Smith’s work came out in 1776, the same year as our own Declaration of Independence was signed.
